In the face of complex global challenges, concerted action is crucial across multiple domains, including education, research, innovation, and cultural engagement. A key part of promoting the green transition is embedding sustainable development within the educational sphere.

Aligned with the EU 2025 vision that highlights digitalization and eco-friendly practices, UNESCO underscores the pivotal role of education in enabling populations to comprehend and tackle the ramifications of climate change. Teachers stand at the forefront of this green transition, playing an essential role.

Schools and educators are tasked with helping students grasp the complexities of environmental challenges, equipping them to become proactive change-makers. To fulfill this critical function, they require continuous support, inspirational models, and opportunities for professional growth.

Our project, informed by needs analysis surveys and SWOT analysis outcomes from our partner institutions, identifies a pressing requirement for the incorporation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with STEM educational methodologies and e-learning platforms.

We aim to enhance our educators’ competencies by amalgamating SDGs with STEM methodologies, facilitating profound learning experiences for various age groups, from primary school (ages 6-12) and secondary school (ages 12-15) to high school (ages 15-18) and adult learners (18+).

To assist schools in realizing their Eco-School aspirations, our project proposes a suite of initiatives: establishing an eco-community, conducting a sustainability audit, devising a concrete action plan, tracking progress, connecting with curricular objectives, and engaging all educational stakeholders.

To support teachers in integrating SDGs into their STEM lessons, we have developed two key resources: a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) and a lesson plan book. These tools are designed to provide educators with the knowledge and practical applications needed to inspire and enact change towards a more sustainable future.

Results / Outputs

MOOC – Massive Open Online Course

A free MOOC dedicated to SDGs is recognized as a crucial innovative element, where a variety of teaching methodologies are showcased. Through the MOOC, our stakeholders will:

  • Gain comprehensive knowledge of SDGs.
  • See the engagement of approximately 350 educators.
  • Learn diverse teaching methodologies on SDG-related topics and develop the capability to execute various projects.
  • Enhance their collaboration and communication skills.
  • Boost their digital literacy skills.

Digital Lesson Plans Book

The digital lesson plan book, an intellectual output of our project, will be available for all educators to use free of charge.

  • The lesson plan book serves as a novel resource:
To support educators at a primary, secondary and tertiary level in order to implement SDG related lessons into their STEAM subjects.
  • To serve as a comprehensive guide for educators seeking to design their own lesson plans.

The e-book contains STEM interdisciplinary lesson plans, incorporating various teaching methodologies centered around the SDGs.
